Position Announcement: Researcher in the project SpongeCity
The Department of Geoinformatics-Z_GIS at University of Salzburg aims to combine high quality education with excellent research. The department has several research groups with an outstanding international reputation (https://zgis.at/research) and is offering a researcher position in the SpongeCity project (https://spongecity.sen2cube.at) with the focus on big Earth Observation data analytics.
The researcher will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers who are focused on Earth Observation and Geoinformatics.
→ Start of the position: ASAP.
→ Duration of contract: at least 2 years (extension possible and envisaged, depending on available project funding)
→ Weekly working hours: 30h
→ Professional level (preferred): predoctoral (holding a MSc degree) with option to do a PhD
Job profile:
→ Collaboration in an international research project
Active participation in project meetings.
Responsible for technical-scientific tasks in the SpongeCity project (http://spongecity.sen2cube.at/).
→Research in Earth observation, big EO data infrastructure, and artificial intelligence
Building big EO data workflows/pipelines using Sentinel-2 (and similar optical) satellite data using Python, Jupyter Notebooks, git, STAC, and workflow tools like Prefect/Apache Airflow or cloud-based geospatial tools.
Create and maintain (semantic) Earth observation data cubes (https://sen2cube.at) and conduct analysis in Python and our in-house developed Sen2Cube.at system.
Handling IT research environments based on Linux and Docker.

Candidates must have a post-secondary degree in the field of geoinformatics, remote sensing, computer science, or a related discipline.
Moreover, interest in scientific work, and the ability to work independently and in teams are mandatory.
A profound technical understanding is a prerequisite for this position. The candidate needs to be qualified to perform state-of-the-art research with a focus on big Earth spatial data infrastructure and algorithm design.
Furthermore, the candidate is expected to conceive new research ideas and support writing grant proposals.
Beyond that, good communication and social skills are required for working in an interdisciplinary and dynamic team as well as for conducting research.
Collaboration on publications with other members of the team is expected, aiming to publish in international journals and attending international conferences.
We offer a friendly working atmosphere as well as remuneration according to the Austrian University
collective bargaining agreement (full-time gross salary per year min. €50.103,20 based on 40 hours per week for PreDoc). We support to pursue a PhD degree based on the project work.
